Unseen Stories: Empathy in Corporate Videos

4–5 minutes

Two Cleveland Clinic videos reveal how empathy uncovers the hidden human experiences behind patient care.

In a hospital hallway, every person you pass is carrying a story you don’t immediately see—and emotions you may not fully understand. Fear. Hope. Uncertainty. Relief. These emotions often remain invisible, yet they shape how people experience moments of care, communication, and connection. Empathy helps reveal those unseen stories, and when organizations bring empathy into corporate storytelling videos, their messages become far more impactful.

I wrote about the importance of empathy in corporate storytelling videos in 2014, when many organizations were producing polished content that explained their work, but often missed the human connection that makes stories unforgettable.

More than a decade later, empathy has become even more important in organizational communication. Whether companies are sharing their purpose, explaining change, or strengthening culture, audiences respond to stories that acknowledge real human experiences.

What Empathy Reveals in Corporate Storytelling

Empathy allows storytelling to move beyond messaging. Instead of simply delivering information, empathetic storytelling helps audiences step into someone else’s perspective. When that happens, communication becomes more resonant and engaging.

In addition to helping audiences see the world through someone else’s eyes, empathy in corporate storytelling videos can:

  • Build trust and emotional credibility.
  • Reveal the human experiences behind decisions and events.
  • Make stories more memorable and shareable.

Below I highlight two Cleveland Clinic storytelling videos that show how empathy can transform organizational communication. Both videos underscore that empathy is central to connecting with audiences on a human level.

Seeing the Hidden Human Stories in Patient Care

One of the most compelling aspects of empathy is the reminder that every person carries a story we don’t immediately see.

The video, “Empathy: The Human Connection to Patient Care,” reveals the hidden emotional journeys of patients, families, and caregivers as they move through a healthcare environment. What might appear to be routine interactions are actually moments shaped by fear, hope, exhaustion, and resilience.

By revealing these unseen stories, the video encourages viewers to reconsider how they perceive the people around them. Everyday encounters suddenly take on deeper meaning when we recognize the emotional experiences others may be carrying.

For communicators, this illustrates an important principle: great storytelling often reveals what is invisible in everyday life. When organizations acknowledge the emotional context behind people’s experiences, their communication becomes more thoughtful and authentic.

Recognizing Patient Vulnerability through Storytelling

Yet unseen stories are only part of empathy. In the second video, “Patients: Afraid and Vulnerable” highlights another essential dimension of empathy: recognizing how vulnerable people can feel when they are receiving care. Patients entering a hospital are often navigating fear, uncertainty, and a loss of control. What may appear routine to medical professionals can feel deeply personal and emotionally intense for the people experiencing it.

The video illustrates how empathy changes those moments. When caregivers pause to acknowledge a patient’s fear or vulnerability, the experience of care becomes more humane and compassionate.

For communicators, this storytelling approach demonstrates another important principle: the most powerful stories reveal the emotional stakes behind everyday interactions.

Lessons for Communicators: Empathy in Action

Empathetic storytelling is not accidental. It is created through intentional choices about perspective, narrative, and emotion.

Here are three principles communicators can apply when creating storytelling videos:

1) Show perspective

Great stories help audiences see the world through someone else’s eyes. Whether the subject is a patient, an employee, or a customer, storytelling becomes engaging when it allows viewers to experience the situation from that person’s perspective.

2) Reveal the unseen story

Every organization has moments that appear routine but carry deep meaning for the people experiencing them. Storytelling that uncovers these unseen moments creates authenticity and emotional depth.

3) Let emotion carry the message

The most effective storytelling videos allow the emotional journey of the story to carry the message, rather than relying solely on narration or explanation.

Why Empathy is Critical in Modern Corporate Storytelling

In today’s organizations, communication often happens during moments of complexity and change. Leaders may need to explain new strategies, organizational shifts, or evolving priorities. In those moments, audiences are not just processing information—they are also processing uncertainty and emotion.

Empathy helps bridge that gap by helping people understand experiences beyond their own. When communication acknowledges people’s experiences and perspectives, it becomes easier for audiences to understand what is happening and why it matters. Empathetic storytelling can help organizations build trust, strengthen connection, and create clarity during change.

Storytelling remains a transformative tool for corporate communicators because stories help translate complex ideas into experiences people can understand. They bring strategy, decisions, and values to life.

The Human Element in Corporate Storytelling

The most effective corporate storytelling does not begin with messaging frameworks or production techniques – it begins with understanding people. When communicators approach storytelling with empathy, they uncover the human experiences that make stories meaningful. Those experiences allow audiences to connect, reflect, and feel deeply.

In the end, the most resonant stories shine a light on the human experiences hiding in plain sight. At Starry Blue Brilliance, I focus on uncovering the human side of communication so stories do more than inform – they truly connect.
